Is Tua the Best QB in the League? Kirby Rakes $$$ & SEC Baseball Action

kirby smart

It’s Friday! Today my pug Miles turns 14:

And tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo – one of the top 3 cultural appropriation holidays of the year (the others being St Patrick’s Day and Thanksgiving – sorry, Indians).

Athlon ranked the SEC quarterbacks this week and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa was #1. This despite the fact that Tua’s never started a game. This also despite the fact that he still hasn’t won the QB competition. Oh, and he missed most of spring with injury.

The guy that won the SEC (Jake Fromm) was ranked 5th and the guy that beat Bama and played for the SEC title (Jarrett Stidham) was ranked 3rd. Feleipe Franks is 13th – let’s put a sticky on this and see where Franks ends up after the season – it won’t be 13th. Hopefully by that point, Tua will have started a game.

Athlon’s QB rankings haven’t always been anywhere close to accurate. Last year, Jalen Hurts was #1 which is fine while All-SEC First Team QB Drew Lock was 8th. And in 2016, Athlon had Chad Kelly #1 (his team went 3-5 before his ACL injury) and Brandon Harris #3.

So take this with a healthy grain of salt.

Georgia came to terms with Kirby Smart on a 7-year, $49 million contract. The ridiculous amount puts Kirby 4th in the SEC in pay (behind Saban, Gus, and Jimbo).

Kirby made $8,000 a year as a grad assistant at Valdosta State in 2000. He’ll make 2.5 times that amount per day going forward. Kirby rn:

Bulldog shortstop Adam Sasser hit 3 home runs, including a grand slam, as Georgia grabbed a road win over Mizzou in the series opener. The Tigers were coming off an emotional win 17-16 win at Iowa on Tuesday. It was UGA’s 3rd game-one win on the road in 4 tries in SEC play.

Brady Singer and Florida hit the road to face #21 Texas A&M this weekend.

LSU hosts #5 Arkansas at the Box as the Tigers fight to get into the NCAAs. Josh Smith will be out for the entire series for the Tigers as he still battles back issues. Arkansas’ 2B Carson Shaddy is still out after taking a HBP on his right hand. And top reliever Matt Cronin will also likley miss the weekend with mono.

Two years ago during the LSU/Arkansas series at the Box, “Rally Possum” became a thing. Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn now says it was staged.

“I would tell you this, somebody put that possum underneath that fence,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said Wednesday. “You can take that to the bank.”

There are no games on the SEC Network tonight which I assume was some sort of clerical error.

Ryan is a “since birth” fan of LSU and the SEC.

He misses Mike Shula, Curly Hallman, and Jim McElwain’s teeth. Ryan asked his prom date out at Waffle House.
