Finebaum’s Power Rankings, UT Fires Prez & UGA-Clemson Soon?

A late start to a Thursday but we’re going strong. Look for our SEC West predictions coming around lunch.

Paul Finebaum released his “official” post-spring SEC power rankings on his show Wednesday:

1. Alabama
2. Georgia
3. Auburn
4. Mississippi State
5. South Carolina
6. Florida
7. LSU
8. Texas A&M
9. Missouri
10. Kentucky
11. Ole Miss
12. Tennessee
13. Arkansas
14. Vanderbilt

I am fighting an uphill battle here but I believe that Pawwwwwlllll, like most in the media, are not as high on USC as they should be. My top 5 would be:

1. Alabama
2. South Carolina
3. Georgia
4. Auburn
5. Mississippi State

Come at me.

Tennessee fired Beverly Davenport, the school chancellor that brought in UTK AD John Currie (fired) and Greg Schiano (hired but never really hired). Read the scathing dismissal letter from school president Joe DiPietro. Davenport was pretty much disliked among Vol sports fans but seems to have had some support among students.

One student speculated that the school is “too wrapped up in things like football” where I’d say emptiness of Neyland suggests they weren’t wrapped up enough.

All 14 SEC programs make the NCAA Golf Regionals. First time anything like that has happened in the sport. Or in any sport.

Vandy is the #1 seed at Kissimmee, Florida, while LSU (Stockton, CA) and Texas A&M (Bryan, TX) are also #1 seeds. Seeding means pretty much zero except who you play with on the first day. And it kinda sounds nice.

The top 5 teams from each of the 6 regionals move onto the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma at the end of the month.

georgia

UGA AD Greg McGarity told the Athens paper that a Georgia-Clemson series is not far off. UGA is looking for a P5 game from 2021-2024 in addition to it’s regularly-scheduled series with Georgia Tech. Clemson has openings in 2021 and 2024. The Clemson and UGA campuses are just 75 miles apart and are a natural rivalry – frankly, more so than the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets.

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach has his post-spring Top 25 out and ranks UGA 4th – the lowest I’ve seen them yet.

UGA and Missouri face off tonight in the only Thursday-Saturday baseball series of the weekend.

alabama

Alabama has signed a deal to host Utah State in 2022. The Tide will pay the Aggies $1,900,000 for the trip. According to Brett McMurphy, it’s the third-highest payout for an opponent ever. The two highest involve SEC teams as well (Florida for Colorado State this year and Auburn for Tulane in 2019.

Ryan is a “since birth” fan of LSU and the SEC.

He misses Mike Shula, Curly Hallman, and Jim McElwain’s teeth. Ryan asked his prom date out at Waffle House.
